See you at the crossroads!

Wow!

I came back today for the first time in well over a year, and I am surprised, to say the least, to find that an audience still lurks ’round hither despite my absence. Hello!

A ton has gone on since my last entry: I birthed Serena, which has me busy for at least the first halves of 2017 and 2018; and as far as journaling goes, – travel or otherwise – I have a mountain of backlog to go through.

To be honest, at this very moment, I find myself at a crossroads yet again, which should come as no surprise, as the crossroad is the very foundation of this blog. But these days, with my domain expiration fast approaching, I question the very fate of this site – do I even want to continue it at all?

Coming off the tails of the recent closure of the entire Boracay island, I’ve heavily contemplated humankind and how responsible they are relative to the environment. Safe to say, they are not. I can’t say otherwise because they’ve we’ve trashed one of the most beautiful islands in the world. As if one sacrificial lamb wasn’t enough, I see the same fate befalling other heavily touristic spots like Siargao, and El Nido, just to name a couple.

Let me tell you, I am getting major Jacob (protector of The Island on LOST, the greatest show on earth) feels and can’t bear to think that I would contribute to the exploitation brought about by human interference, specially of the capitalist kind.

On the other hand, what good is beauty if it is not witnessed?

Before today, before coming back to the blog, I was almost 100% sure that I was ready to discontinue. But seeing that people still do read me, and there might still be some value to my voice with regard to this subject – however small and soft at the moment – now I’m not so sure? I feel a responsibility towards my country, and the earth, to preserve its beauty. My lack of scientific inclination delegated me to more of a communication stance, and qualitative documentation is well within the realm of my power.

I suppose I could try harder to research (and develop? we’ll see) on socially-motivated movements on sustainable tourism, which was the original intention of this effort in the first place. Alas, I got sidetracked along the way.

Anyway, we’ll see where this goes! We’ll find out sooner or later.

Safe travels!
