I took these photos on a work-related trip to the Bicol region, four years ago. It was a press junket, and we were so gallantly billeted at the Misibis Bay Resort in Bacacay, Albay.
I had no hand in the development of this itinerary; I just went along with the flow. Our program included a sunset cruise across the bay on the first day, and then an ATV excursion to the top of the mountain at sunrise the next day. And to this day, the Bicol sunrise remains to be one of the best sunrises I’ve ever seen, in my life.
Apart from it being breathtaking on its own, atop Mount Misibis overlooking the ocean, this particular one is so unforgettable mostly because of what it took to witness it. It may very well be the most daring of my sunrises chases. I mentioned taking all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to the top of the mountain. This was before dawn even started to crack, and upon a steep, rocky, unpaved path. I had enough control over the ATV for most of the 45-minute drive, but gas aggression, intending to propel myself forward, caused me to lose control over my ride for a brief moment. But that brief moment could have cost me my life! — I was one second, or six inches away from driving off the edge of a cliff! (Don’t tell my mom.)
But then you get up there, to a view like that?
Completely worth it.
